Recovery from septoplasty involves several stages.
Each with its own set of expectations and care instructions to ensure a smooth healing process.
Post-surgery, it’s crucial to monitor for signs of infection, which may include increased redness, swelling, or warmth around the surgical site, persistent pain, unusual discharge, or fever. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your surgeon immediately for further evaluation and care.
Swelling is a common part of the healing process after septoplasty. The most significant swelling occurs within the first 48-72 hours post-surgery. However, it gradually decreases over the next few weeks. Most patients notice a substantial reduction in swelling by the end of the second to third week, although minor swelling may persist for several months.
Sleeping in an elevated position is recommended to reduce swelling and promote drainage. Use pillows to prop your head up, keeping it above the level of your heart. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or side to prevent pressure on your nose.
You can shower 24-48 hours after surgery, but it’s important to avoid getting the surgical site wet. Use a washcloth to clean your face and be cautious not to dislodge any packing or splints that may be in place.
Avoid blowing your nose for at least one to two weeks after septoplasty to prevent disrupting the healing process. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions based on your individual recovery. If you need to clear your nose, gently dab it with a tissue.
Pain levels vary among patients, but most experience moderate discomfort rather than severe pain. Pain can be effectively managed with prescribed medications. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be recommended once the initial pain subsides.
Nosebleeds are common in the first few days following septoplasty. It’s usually minor and can be managed by gently dabbing your nose with a tissue. If bleeding is persistent or heavy, contact your surgeon for advice.
Some patients experience a temporary loss of taste or smell after septoplasty due to swelling and congestion. This resolves within a few weeks as swelling decreases and normal nasal function returns.
Crusting inside the nose is normal during the initial weeks of recovery. This can last for a few weeks as the surgical site heals. Regular saline rinses can help keep the nasal passages clean and reduce crusting. Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions.
