How to help muscle relax after breast augmentation

Professor Ash Mosahebi

It is common to experience muscle cramps after a breast augmentation. Tension and discomfort are particularly common if the implants have been placed behind the muscle.

During a breast augmentation, the chest muscles are stretched. This can create tension and cramps, which may be uncomfortable, but there are some tips you can follow to help your chest muscles relax for a smoother recovery after breast augmentation.

Tips for reducing cramps and muscle tension

Muscle relaxation is key to minimising discomfort and allowing your body to recover properly. Below are some effective tips to help relax your chest muscles after a breast augmentation.

1. Gentle movements and stretching

Performing light, gentle movements helps prevent stiffness and maintains muscle mobility. Here are some stretching exercises you can try:

  • Arm circles
Slowly rotate your arms in small circles to wake and stretch the chest muscles without putting too much strain on the area.
  • Wall stretches
Stand facing a wall, extend one arm against it, and gently stretch your chest by turning your body away from the wall. Repeat on the other side.
  • Doorway stretches
Stand in a doorway with your arms extended at shoulder height and press your palms against the door frame. Gently step forward to feel a stretch across your chest.

These exercises should be introduced gradually and only after receiving approval from your surgeon. Gentle stretching helps improve blood circulation, which can relieve tension and support the healing process. Avoid overdoing it, and stick to stretching only—introducing too much movement too early or overstretching the muscles can interfere with healing.

2. Heat therapy

Use a warm compress, a wheat bag, or a hot water bottle for 15–20 minutes at a time to stimulate blood circulation.

Note that in some cases, it may be unsuitable to use heat too early after surgery. Wait until the initial swelling has subsided and you have received approval from your surgeon.

3. Hydration and nutrition

Muscles recover better if you maintain a well-balanced diet and keep your body hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and reduces soreness, cramping, and stiffness. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein also supports tissue repair and recovery.

Foods high in antioxidants (such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts) and omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and flaxseed) can help reduce inflammation, while protein-rich foods aid muscle repair.

4. Medication and pain relief

Follow your surgeon’s instructions for taking prescribed medications such as muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs. Discuss any potential side effects with your doctor before starting medication.

The importance of muscle relaxation

Relaxing the chest muscles after a breast augmentation can help treat and prevent tightness, discomfort, and cramps in the days following a breast augmentation.

  • Relieves discomfort, tension, and cramps
  • Reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation
  • Promotes faster healing
